The history of Essen dates back to the 9th century, when the city was first mentioned in documents. In the Middle Ages, Essen developed into an important center of mining and iron processing. Later, the city was mainly characterized by the coal and steel industry. Today, Essen is a modern city with a diverse economic structure. In addition to industrial companies, there are also numerous service and trading companies.
